Our 2025 Career Awards Recognize Legacies in Pain Research and Care

Nominations and Applications for this award were accepted until December 1st, 2024.

From scientific innovation to outstanding contributions to pain management, our Awards Committee celebrates groundbreaking discoveries to impactful initiatives that exemplify excellence in their early career achievements and enduring legacies.

The Canadian Pain Society is strongly committed to strengthening diversity in both research and clinical practice. We encourage nominations by and for racialized persons, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, women, 2SLGBTQ+, persons with disabilities, and others who bring diverse perspectives to the field of pain.

Distinguished Career Award

The Distinguished Career Award recognizes long standing contributions to pain research and/or management. The selection will be made by a committee formed by the Canadian Pain Society.

This Award Includes

  1. Keynote Presentation at our 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting

  2. Economy class travel to the CPS Annual Scientific Meeting (up to $1000.00)¹ 

  3. Taxi fare and incidentals (up to $100.00)¹ 

  4. Three (3) nights’ accommodation at a designated ASM hotel, at the base rate¹ 

  5. Complimentary registration to our 2025 Scientific Meeting

  6. Commemorative Plaque

¹ The award recipient is responsible for booking and paying for their accommodation and travel to the Annual Scientific Meeting. Reimbursements will be processed as noted above once the event concludes.

HOW TO APPLY

All applications, submitted in English or in French, must include the following:

  1. Completion of our online form.

  2. A letter of nomination, in English or French, signed by three or more CPS regular members that clearly summarizes the nominee’s contributions to pain research and/or management (e.g., clinical responsibilities).

  3. CV of the nominee (no formatting requirements).

  4. All documents must be combined and uploaded into one PDF file.

  5. Files cannot exceed 25 MB.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award honors outstanding and dedicated service to the Canadian Pain Society. Examples of outstanding service may include, but are not limited to, contributions to the Board of Directors, CPS Committees (i.e. scientific program, awards), developing a new Special Interest Group, or the development of new initiatives within the Society.

This Award Includes

  1. Complimentary registration to the 2025 Scientific Meeting

  2. Commemorative Plaque

All applications, submitted in English or in French, must include the following:

  1. Completion of our online form.

  2. A letter of nomination, in English or French, signed by three or more CPS regular members that clearly summarizes the nominee’s contributions to pain research and/or management (e.g., clinical responsibilities).

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Early Career Award

The Early Career Award recognizes outstanding achievements in pain research and/or management by an individual at the early stage of his or her career. The selection will be made by a committee formed by the Canadian Pain Society.

This Award Includes

  1. Keynote Presentation at the 2025 CPS Annual Scientific Meeting

  2. Economy class travel to the CPS Annual Scientific Meeting (up to $1000.00)¹

  3. Taxi fare and incidentals (up to $100.00)

  4. Three (3) nights’ accommodation at a designated ASM hotel, at the base rate

  5. Complimentary registration to the 2025 Scientific Meeting

  6. Commemorative Plaque

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  1. Nominee must be a current member in good standing of the Canadian Pain Society.

  2. Nominees must hold a PhD or MD degree (or equivalent) and be within 10 years of their independent research and/or clinical appointment at the time of application. Interruptions and delays in career will be considered when determining eligibility.

Outstanding Pain Mentorship Award

The Outstanding Pain Mentorship Award will be presented annually at the CPS Annual Scientific Meeting to a researcher and/or clinician who consistently exemplifies outstanding mentorship in the training of future pain researchers and/or clinicians.

This Award Includes

  1. Complimentary registration to the 2025 Scientific Meeting

  2. Commemorative Plaque

HOW TO APPLY

All applications, submitted in English or in French, must include the following:

  1. Completion of our online form.

  2. A two-page letter of nomination, in English or French, signed by three or more CPS regular members.

  3. CV of the nominee (no formatting requirements).

  4. All documents must be combined and uploaded into one PDF file.

  5. Files cannot exceed 25 MB.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  1. Nominee must be a current member in good standing of the Canadian Pain Society.

  2. Candidates must be nominated by at least 1 colleague or current/former trainee.

Pain Awareness Award

The goals of the Pain Awareness Award are to raise awareness of the problem of under managed pain in Canada, to highlight efforts towards finding solutions to the problem, and to reach a wide Canadian audience.

This Award Includes

  1. Commemorative Plaque

  2. Complimentary registration to the 2025 Scientific Meeting

  3. The recipient(s) will be invited to present their project at the 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting. The format of the presentation (ie. poster, concurrent session, display table) will be determined by the awardee in collaboration with the Scientific Program Committee. The CPS may seek permission to reproduce the work to continue raising awareness.

HOW TO APPLY

All applications, submitted in English or in French, must include the following:

  1. Completion of our online form.

  2. A maximum one-page brief description of candidate’s project, in English or French, including impact on target audience. Please use 12pt, Times New Roman Font.

  3. All documents must be combined and uploaded into one PDF file.

  4. Files cannot exceed 25 MB.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Projects involving electronic or printed media, visual, fine arts, dance, music or other creative expressions will be considered.

 

If you wish to submit an extra item to support the project (ie. DVD, CD, book) please send three(3) copies. The CPS encourages projects using several forms of expression and group submissions and submissions from different backgrounds and disciplines are preferred (ie. projects combining science and art, collaborations between persons living with pain and health care providers).

Person with Lived Experience of Pain Leadership Award

The Person with Lived Experience of Pain Leadership Award recognizes outstanding contributions by People with Lived Experience¹ to pain research, education, and/or community building, in Canada.

This Award Includes

  1. Keynote Presentation at the 2025 CPS Annual Scientific Meeting

  2. Economy class travel to the CPS Annual Scientific Meeting (up to $1000.00)²

  3. Taxi fare and incidentals (up to $100.00)²

  4. Three (3) nights' accommodation at a designated ASM hotel, at the base rate²

  5. Complimentary registration to the 2025 Scientific Meeting

  6. Commemorative Plaque

¹ Based on the PCORI Rubric of Patient Partners including people with lived experience of pain, family members, and caregivers.

² Travel and accommodation reservations are made by the award winner, in collaboration with The Canadian Pain Society office. Reimbursements will be processed as noted above once the event concludes.

HOW TO APPLY

All applications, submitted in English or in French, must include the following:

  1. Completion of our online form.

  2. A one-page letter of nomination signed by at least one CPS Regular Member and at least one representative of a community organization (ex. A Canadian organizations providing services and/or education to people in the community) describing the nominee, their contributions and impact on pain research, education, and/or community building, and any relevant past achievements if applicable.

  3. All documents must be combined and uploaded into one PDF file.

  4. Files cannot exceed 25 MB.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  1. The Person with Lived Experience of Pain¹ should have a demonstrated track record of outstanding contributions to pain research, education, and/or community building activities.

  2. The spirit of the Person with Lived Experience of Pain Leadership Award is to recognize avocational pain leadership activities (ie. not part of their primary vocation). Activities described in the nomination letter should clearly indicate how the applicant engages in pain leadership activities distinct from their primary vocation.

  3. Previous applicants are encouraged to re-apply, providing they meet the above eligibility criteria.
