The Canadian Journal of Pain covers basic science, multidisciplinary clinical research, and knowledge implementation science. It is an Open Access, international, peer-reviewed journal publishing high-quality, original research.

Open Access (OA) means you can publish your research so it is free to access online as soon as it is published, meaning anyone can read (and cite) your work. Please see the Guide to Open Access for more information.

Editorial Review Mentorship Program
Scope of the Program:
Program Fellows will undergo training and gain experience with the peer review process, including shadowing experienced Journal Editorial Board members and reviewing submitted manuscripts. The program will provide Program Fellows with a unique opportunity to participate in the manuscript review process and see how manuscripts are handled from submission through revisions to the final decision, including publication or rejection. The Journal publishes original research, review articles, case reports, and editorials using a single blind/anonymous review process. The intention is to expose the Fellows to a variety of submission types.

Eligibility:
-The Canadian Pain Society is strongly committed to diversity within its membership. Diversity strengthens both research and clinical practice in pain. We encourage nominations by and for racialized persons, Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour, women, 2SLGBTQ+, persons with disabilities, and others who bring diverse perspectives to the field of pain.
-Graduate students, residents, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, early career scientists and/or clinicians involved in pain research from all disciplines are welcome to apply.
-Must have at least one publication as a first or senior author in a peer reviewed pain journal.
-Have little or no experience as a manuscript reviewer for a peer-reviewed journal.
-Member of the Canadian Pain Society.
-Ready to commit for a one-year term (between 1-5 hours per month).
Opportunities:
-Introduction to Taylor and Francis ScholarOne system and to their personnel (e.g., Portfolio Manager, Production Team, etc.)
-Introduction to the Editorial Office staff at the Canadian Journal of Pain who will provide support in the manuscript review process
-Participation in peer review from between 1 and 5 manuscripts under the supervision of Editorial Board Members or experienced journal reviewers.
-At the end of the Editorial Review Mentorship Program, Fellows will become active reviewers for the Canadian Journal of Pain.
-Recognition for participating in the Editorial Review Mentorship -Program will be acknowledged in the Canadian Journal of Pain at the end of the year. A certificate will also be provided.
Expectations for Fellows:
-Engage in quality reviews of manuscripts submitted to the Canadian Journal of Pain.
-Engage in regular meetings with an assigned mentor from the Journal’s Editorial Board or experienced journal reviewers (frequency adjusted based on needs).
-Become an active reviewer for the Canadian Journal of Pain after completion of the Editorial Review Mentorship Program.
Number of Available Positions:
1-2 positions will be available each year depending on the interest and expertise of Editorial Board members and a suitable match with the Fellow. We will monitor applications to ensure diversity.
Term:
One year (starting in September 2025)

-Letter of intent (maximum two pages) that describes the applicant’s experience in peer review, list of publications, experience (if any) with the Canadian Journal of Pain as a consumer/reviewer, and how the Editorial Review Mentorship Program would align with their career goals and impact their career.
-To monitor diversity of applicants in the program, we encourage applicants to self-identify in their letter if they belong to a historically underrepresented, group, including racialized minorities, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and women.
-Letter of recommendation from a current or former supervisor attesting to the Fellow’s ability to integrate this role within their existing workload, and ability as an author to address the peer review comments they receive during the submission process of manuscripts.
-Curriculum Vitae (any format).
