The Neuropathic Pain Special Interest Group (NePSIG) of the Canadian Pain Society brings together clinicians and researchers from multiple disciplines with expertise in the pathophysiology and management of neuropathic pain. Its main output has been the development of consensus-based, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, first for the pharmacological management of neuropathic pain and later extended to interventional treatments such as spinal cord stimulation, epidural injections, intravenous infusions, and nerve blocks. Beyond guideline development, the group functions as a professional network within the Society, allowing members with a shared interest in neuropathic pain to collaborate, share expertise, and stay connected with developments in the field. Its more recent efforts have focused on organizing refresher courses for practicing clinicians and trainees with an interest in treating neuropathic pain.
Canadian evidence‐based guidelines on spinal procedures for chronic pain:
The first ever "Canadian evidence‐based guidelines on spinal procedures for chronic pain" (attached here and open access on https://associationofanaesthetists-publications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/anae.70440) in the journal Anaesthesia!
These peer reviewed and stakeholder-informed guidelines will help optimize care for patients with pain of spinal origin. The five guideline panels included over 50 epidemiologists, physicians, patients, medical regulatory organizations and provincial healthcare funders. Procedures addressed in these guidelines include epidural steroid injections, facet and sacroiliac joint injections, radiofrequency ablation procedures for spinal joint denervation, and paravertebral injections. The guidelines include recommendations on definition of a successful outcome, the appropriate interval before repeating a procedure, safe annual dose of injectable steroids, optimizing image-guidance, training and sterility standards.
The Canadian Pain Society and the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Management at University Health Network, Sinai Health System, and Women's College Hospital also supported this project from inception to publication.
