Offering a diverse array of award categories, recognizing excellence in pain research, care, and advocacy.

Notes for Equity/Trainee Research Award:  This funding does not cover indirect costs.  Extension requests should be sent to the Awards Committee Chair, Anna Taylor. Should any funds remain unspent at the end of the period will need to be returned to the Canadian Pain Society. The $2,000 grant will be distributed directly to the awardee’s institution from The Canadian Pain Society after receipt of details regarding whom it should be sent and made payable, along with the address and any other information needed for this purpose.

Our 2024 Research Award Categories

From scientific innovation to outstanding contributions to pain management, our awards celebrate individuals and organizations at the forefront of advancing pain science and the well-being of people with lived experience. Our 2024 award selection will be made by our Awards Committee.

Trainee Research Award

Supporting PhD pain research project(s), one (1) in basic science and one (1) in a clinical-related field.

The winner of our 2024 Award will receive ‣ A grant of $2,000* to support operating costs associated with the student’s dissertation study as outlined in the application (e.g., participant stipends, reagents). * The funds cannot be used for trainee stipends. * The duration of these grants is for one year, although an additional one year extension is available upon request if needed. ‣ Complimentary four-day (4) registration to our Annual event. ‣ Complimentary ticket to our Presidents Gala, where your award will be presented.

Criteria for this year's award winner ‣ Applicants must be current trainee members of The Canadian Pain Society. ‣ Applicants must currently be enrolled as a PhD student in a Canadian university graduate program. ‣ The CPS will evaluate applications according to a) the applicant’s qualifications/research background and b) merit of the proposed research. ‣ Applicants may be considered for the 2024 Trainee Research Awards and the Equity Trainee Research Award. However, successful applicants will only be eligible to receive one Award. * Previous years’ Trainee Research Award winners are not eligible for the 2024 award. ‣ The CPS will distribute the award to the trainee’s institution once granted*. ‣ The recipient must acknowledge the Trainee Research Award in publications and presentations associated with research for which the funding is provided.

Equity Trainee Research Award

Funding opportunities for historically under-represented trainees, to enhance inclusion, diversify scientific perspectives, and reduce biases.

The winner of our 2024 Award will receive ‣ A grant of $2,000* to support operating costs associated with the student’s dissertation study as outlined in the application (e.g., participant stipends, reagents). * The funds cannot be used for trainee stipends. * The duration of these grants is for one year, although an additional one year extension is available upon request if needed. ‣ Complimentary four-day (4) registration to our Annual event. ‣ Complimentary ticket to our Presidents Gala, where your award will be presented.

Criteria for this year's award winner This award will be granted to a trainee who identifies as belonging to a historically underrepresented group, including racialized minorities, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and women, whose Research Project Summary obtains the highest reviewer scores for a doctoral project in basic or clinical science. ‣ Applicants must be current trainee members of The Canadian Pain Society. ‣ Applicants must currently be enrolled as a PhD student in a Canadian university graduate program. ‣ The CPS will evaluate applications according to a) the applicant’s qualifications/research background and b) merit of the proposed research. ‣ Applicants may be considered for the 2024 Trainee Research Awards and the Equity Trainee Research Award. ‣   A letter of reference from the nominee's current or proposed supervisor that addresses research abilities and potential.

For our Trainee Research Award please include a two-page Research Project Summary outlining the research project. This summary should include background, aims, methods, and significance. Please use Times New Roman in a minimum of 12pt font.

Application Requirements for Postdoctoral Fellow ‣   Nominee CV. ‣   Nominees Canadian Common CV. ‣   A letter of reference from the nominee's current or proposed supervisor that addresses research abilities and potential, and any financial or resource commitments that they (or their institution) are making in support of the proposed research. ‣   A two-page Research Project Summary briefly outlining the research project. This summary should include background, aims, methods, and significance. Please use a minimum of 12pt font. ‣   A 500-word statement on how the proposed research project is relevant to Veterans living with chronic pain.

If also applying to the Equity Trainee Research Award, please include a statement (500 words, maximum) describing how the nominee meets the eligibility criteria and reasons for applying for the award. This narrative will only be used to contextualize eligibility criteria. It will not be considered in the evaluation of the scientific merit of the proposed study.
