Patients Included 2017
Share |

The Scientific Program Committee (SPC) is delighted to share that, for the 1st time ever, the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) of the Canadian Pain Society (CPS) (to be held in Halifax May 23-26) will be a Patients Included meeting.

The Patients Included conference charter provides organizations like CPS with a means of demonstrating that their events are committed to incorporating the experience of patients as experts in living with their condition.

An accredited Patients Included conference must successfully meet five criteria. The criteria (bolded) and how CPS plans to meet each one are listed below:

  1. Patients or caregivers with experience relevant to the conference’s central theme actively participate in the design and planning of the event, including the selection of themes, topics and speakers.
    • The SPC involved patients or caregivers with experience relevant to our meeting’s focus on pain in the design and planning of the event, including the selection of themes, topics and speakers. We were pleased to welcome two patient representatives onto our SPC this year.
  2. Patients or caregivers with experience of the issues addressed by the event participate in its delivery, and appear in its physical audience.
    •  Patients or caregivers with experience in pain will participate as speakers at the meeting (our call for symposia this year strongly encouraged inclusion of patients as speakers and several of our accepted symposia include patients as speakers) and be part of the audience of attendees, and appear in its physical audience (we are offering an at-cost patient registration fee for the meeting). Click here for more information.
  3. Travel and accommodation expenses for patients or carers participating in the advertised programme are paid in full, in advance. Scholarships are provided by the conference organisers to allow patients or carers affected by the relevant issues to attend as delegates.
    •  Travel support for 6 patients (2 local, 4 from out of town) speaking in our advertised program is being covered in full and in advance of the event from our conference budget, and as a result of a partnership with the Training & Mentoring Committee of the Chronic Pain Network (CPN) SPOR (Strategy for Patient Oriented Research) Network.
    • We advertised two (2) patient scholarships for patients (open to all patient/caregiver residents in Canada). Click here for more information.
    • We received 19 applications from patients, and were able to secure additional funding to support not only the 2 scholarships advertised, but an additional 3rd scholarship (funded by the CPS Awards budget) and a 4th scholarship to support a patient from Quebec (funded via a partnership from the Quebec Pain Research Network; QPRN).
    • We are also covering the registration costs of 3 local patients to attend the meeting
  4.  The disability requirements of participants are accommodated. All applicable sessions, breakouts, ancillary meetings, and other programme elements are open to patient delegates.
    • The conference will accommodate the disability requirements of participants. The conference facilities are fully accessible. All applicable sessions, breakouts, and other conference events will be open to patients.
  5. Access for virtual participants is facilitated with free streaming video provided online wherever possible.
    • We will facilitate access for virtual patient participants, with an active social media presence and use of the hashtag #CanadianPain17. Any materials available post conference will also be shared publicly.
