Nursing Issues - About Us

Our purposes are to identify how nursing can best impact the quality of pain management across different contexts of care (e.g. community, rural, tertiary, long-term, & primary care), to build upon the uniqueness and strengths of nursing in the management of pain in collaboration with patients/families and other health professionals, and to develop interprofessional partnerships across various health sectors dedicated to the advancement of pain research, practice, and education in pain assessment and management.

For several years, CPS conference attendees and various other groups from around the country have been meeting informally to discuss interests in pain management with regard to nursing issues. The challenges in pain management are interprofessional and not solely the responsibility of nurses. However, nurses often take the leadership in making changes and the SIG-NI will provide a channel for consolidating our efforts within the multiprofessional context of the Canadian Pain Society. We aim to make a difference in Canadian pain management practices.

The inaugural meeting for the Canadian Pain Society Special Interest Group-Nursing Issues (CPS SIG-NI) was held in Halifax at the 2005 annual conference. Attendees at this meeting heard the inspiring history of nurses within the CPS and from across the country who have made a national and international impact on improving pain management practices. As well, current nursing initiatives from around the country were shared. These presentations sparked great discussion and enthusiasm for making change.

Formalization of this SIG was in May 2005, however many of us across the country have been sharing our expertise and enquiries in pain management -nursing issues through an on-line list-serve since 1999. You can participate in this internet-based communication system by connecting on-line at:

The CPS SIG-Nursing Issues group looks forward to sharing future initiatives with our CPS colleagues.
